Symposium Description & Theme

The Montessori Consortium Symposium series is an annual, one-day event that fosters engagement, collaboration, and professional development among schools - Montessori and non-Montessori, public and private, independent and parochial, pre-K through post-secondary.

The theme of the 2017 symposium is Montessori: Today and Tomorrow with keynote speaker Dr. Mira DebsDirector of the Yale Education Studies Program. Dr. Debs will be presenting two talks, each followed by guided small group discussions:

  • Expanding Montessori access & maintaining Montessori fidelity: opportunities & challenges, and
  • School Choice, Equity, Diversity & Montessori

Keynote Speaker

Mira Debs, Ph.D.
Director, Yale Education Studies Program

A sociologist of education who studies school choice, school diversity, urban education, public policy and progressive public schools, Dr. Debs’ work has appeared in Cultural Sociology, Journal of Montessori Research, Montessori Public, and Nations and Nationalism. In addition, her research has been profiled in Education Week.

Dr. Debs is deeply connected to Montessori education, having cofounded Montessori for Social Justice, served as a founding board member of Elm City Montessori School, and trained as an early childhood assistant. Additionally, Dr. Debs herself was a student in a Montessori classroom and has been the parent of a Montessori student. Taken together, these experiences give her a unique perspective regarding the strengths of - and challenges facing - Montessori education both today and tomorrow.
